Identity in Christ

Learning Who I Am Through Him

When I first came to really know Christ, one of the most life-changing moments was discovering who I truly was—not through the voices around me, not through my past mistakes, but through God’s eyes.

I remember a “WOW” moment when I judged someone else’s behavior as harsh or wrong… and God gently held up a mirror, showing me that I had acted the exact same way, often not long ago. And yet, I felt His unwavering love. That moment began a journey of unlearning lies and stepping into the truth of who God says I am.

For so many years, I carried voices—sometimes from childhood, sometimes from society—that whispered untruths about my value, my abilities, and my purpose. But God’s voice is different. His voice speaks life. His voice speaks truth.

It wasn’t just knowing the facts about God that changed me—it was experiencing them in my heart. Learning that I am His, that I am intentional, un-coincidental, and beloved, gave me the freedom to become who He created me to be.

One practical step I took: I wrote down the names of God and who He said I was—His promises, His truths—on post-it notes and surrounded my desk and walls with them. Every day, I repeated them aloud, challenging my mind and heart to believe. Slowly, God replaced lies with truth, head knowledge with heart knowledge.

Scripture Reflections

Here are some verses that remind us who we are in Christ:

  • Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
  • Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
  • Galatians 2:20 – “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
  • Romans 8:37–39 – “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

To go deeper into this idea of who God says you are, I encourage you to watch this short, encouraging message from Priscilla Shirer: Who God Says You Are. Take notes or jot a few thoughts in your journal as you reflect on what God is revealing to you about your identity in Him.

Reflect and Journal (Private / Personal Reflection)

Take a few moments to reflect on God’s truth about you. Write in your journal, or download a blank journal to capture your thoughts, prayers, and insights. This is your personal space to explore who God says you are.

Journaling Prompts:

  1. What lies have I believed about myself? Where did they come from?
  2. Which statements of God’s truth feel hardest to believe—and why?
  3. How can I make God’s truth visible in my daily life (e.g., post-its, journaling, Scripture cards)?
  4. Reflect on a recent situation where God gently showed you His truth about yourself.
  5. How does understanding my identity in Christ change the way I view others?

Download your free journal to start capturing your thoughts and reflections today—it’s created for you to make space for notes, prayers, and insights as you grow in Christ.
